IP protection types in the bathroom

A modern bathroom with visualised IP protection ratings: IP44 for moisture-protected luminaires, IP20 for dry areas and IP67 for waterproof applications. The visualisation highlights the safety classifications of the lighting.

When buying lights, you should always keep an eye on the IP protection rating. This is because a luminaire is exposed to different environmental influences depending on where it is used. Luminaires in outdoor areas or bathrooms require a higher level of protection against the ingress of moisture than luminaires in living spaces. The IP protection indicates how well a luminaire is protected against the ingress of water.

The IP code is indicated by two digits. The first digit describes the protection against foreign bodies and contact and the second the impermeability to water and moisture.

The higher the number, the better the luminaire is protected against water.

Protected areas in the bathroom

Depending on their exact position, bathroom lights must have certain IP protection ratings. Caution is required where electricity and moisture come together. In the interests of safety, there are therefore special regulations to avert danger and prevent accidents. Three so-called protection areas for bathrooms are defined in the DIN VDE 0100 Part 701 standard.

The following of our DOTLUX lights fit perfectly in the bathroom:

The VDE guidelines must be observed for a room height of up to 2.25 metres (measured from the floor).

Which protection class for which bathroom lights?

Bathtub and shower

In the bath or shower area, the lights must have IP protection class 67. This means that they are waterproof in the event of temporary immersion.

Shower head and bathtub or shower tray

For surfaces up to a height of 2.25 m around the shower head and bath or shower tray, IP65 is the correct protection rating for your lights. This means they are protected against water jets.

Up to 60 cm around the bath or shower

Lights with IP44 protection are recommended up to 60 cm around the bath or shower and on the wall up to 2.25 m, so that they are splash-proof.
