BEG funding

BEG federal funding programme (federal funding for efficient buildings)

The Federal Subsidy for Efficient Buildings (BEG) has been promoting investments in energy efficiency and renewable energies for new and existing buildings since 1 January 2021.

It applies to individual measures, residential buildings and non-residential buildings. For all measures, you can choose between grants (Bafa) or loans with a repayment subsidy (KfW).

General information

The directive comes into force on 1 January 2021 and ends on 31 December 2030.

  • Companies, including sole traders and municipal companies
  • other legal entities under private law, including housing cooperatives
  • freelancers
  • Municipal authorities, municipal and special-purpose associations
  • as well as legally dependent municipal enterprises of local authorities
  • non-profit organisations including churches

This applies to owners, lessees or tenants of the property, part of the property, building or part of the building, as well as to contractors. Leaseholders, tenants or contractors require written authorisation from the owner.

The funding rate is a flat rate of 20 per cent of the eligible expenditure.

Eligible expenditure is capped at 1,000 euros per square metre of net floor area, up to a maximum of 15 million euros in total.

The funding is granted either as a direct subsidy or as a repayment subsidy for the KfW loan. The direct grant can be combined with other financing.
The KfW 278 funding programme was transferred to the BEG funding programme at KfW on 1 July 2021 (loan with 20% repayment subsidy).

Note: The KfW programme variants of the BEG were temporarily suspended from 24.01.2022 until additional budget funds are made available. BAFA's BEG funding programmes will continue unchanged.
